Video audio file format and extension

Video format and Extension

Video format refers to container format to hold multiple kinds of digitally encoded video data in the form of a data file. A filename extension is a suffix to the name of a computer file applied to indicate the file format of its contents.

Video formats common used

OJOsoft video converter software can convert various video formats to WMV, MKV, MOV, MPEG(MPG,DAT), MP4, TS, ASF, AVI, 3GP, 3G2 as output format. The To MPEG Button on the interface also gives you MPG and DAT as output formats.

WMV: More or less MPEG4; can contain nearly any codec, including several Microsoft spinoffs of MPEG-4 which vary in their freedom and licensing requirements.
Matroska (MKV) doesn't standard for any codec or system, as it can hold virtually anything. It is an open standard and open source container format.
MOV is standard QuickTime video container from Apple Inc.
MPEG program stream is standard container for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 elementary streams on reasonably reliable media such as disks; And is also used also on DVD-Video discs.
MP4 is standard audio and video container for the MPEG-4 multimedia portfolio, based on the ISO base media file format defined in MPEG-4 Part 12 and JPEG 2000 Part 12.
ASF is standard container for Microsoft WMA and WMV.
AVI is the standard Microsoft Windows container, also based on RIFF.
3GP is used by many mobile phones; based on the ISO base media file format.

Audio file formats

An audio file format is a file format for storing audio data on a computer system. It can be a raw bitstream, but it is usually a container format or an audio data format with defined storage layer.

There are three major groups of audio file formats:
Uncompressed audio formats, such as WAV, AIFF, AU or raw header-less PCM;
Formats with lossless compression, such as FLAC, Monkey's Audio (filename extension APE), WavPack (filename extension WV), Shorten, Tom's lossless Audio Kompressor (TAK), TTA, ATRAC Advanced Lossless, Apple Lossless, MPEG-4 SLS, MPEG-4 ALS, MPEG-4 DST, Windows Media Audio Lossless (WMA Lossless).
Formats with lossy compression, such as MP3, Vorbis, Musepack, AAC, ATRAC and lossy Windows Media Audio(WMA).

file format and codec

A codec performs the encoding and decoding of the raw audio data while the data itself is stored in a file with a specific audio file format. Most of audio file formats can be created with one of two or more encoders or codecs. Although most audio file formats support only one type of audio data (created with an audio coder), a multimedia container format (as MKV or AVI) may support multiple types of audio and video data.
