Audio compression is a form of data compression designed to reduce the storage size of of audio files. Audio compression codec refers to something that encodes and decodes video or audio files.
Audio codecs often used include MP3, MPEG2/4 LC, Windows Media Audio 8, Vorbis, MPEG2/4 AAC- LC, AMR NB, AC3, MPEG1 Layer 2, etc..Different players support different audio codecs. You have to know which audio codecs the player support before selecting audio compression codec.
In both lossy and lossless compression, information redundancy is reduced, using methods such as coding, pattern recognition and linear prediction to reduce the amount of information used to represent the uncompressed data. The trade-off between slightly reduced audio quality and transmission or storage size for multimedia is outweighed by the latter for most practical audio applications in which users may not perceive the loss in playback rendition quality.
